Anti-Spam Screensaver

Now then, here’s an interesting story, Lycos have launched a new anti-spam screensaver, which apparently targets the domains of companies selling those products advertised by spam emails in order to use up large amounts of their bandwidth, and attempt to force them to incur large charges from their hosting provider.

I’ve not directly linked to the site holding the screensaver, as I believe it could well be illegal - it’s certainly a very similar proposition to a virus writer co-ordinating a Distributed Denial of Service attack on a company.

Now, I’m not saying that spam is good, or that I am on the side of the spammers in this - I’m not - I hate spam email as much as anyone else. However, I’m also not sure that Lycos haven’t gone too far in this battle against the spammers.

  • Lycos’ website is now displaying a “Stay Tuned” message - I wonder if they’ve already pulled the project?
