Site Upgrades

Due to some fairly serious problems with the “live antispam” functions on the b2evolution back-end and it’s associated website, I’m finally making the jump to wordpress.

I’ll try and keep the RSS feed addresses working, for those of you who use them, but I expect things to get a bit strange here from time to time over the next few days…

[Update] Well, I failed to keep the RSS feeds working, so my apologies for that - I did try! However you’ll find the new feed links at the bottom of the main page, where you can subscribe to both the main posts feed, and the comments feed.

  • Congratulations, good luck and welcome to the dark side!

And maybe (just maybe, with WP’s anti-spam facilities) I won’t have to pad out comments like this in order to make it more than 18 words long…

Tell me about it… it’s a pain for me too… but it’s time to make the jump (eighteen nineteen)

Well, here it is, the blog on Wordpress - now there’s a fair bit still to do - including the site design, themes and relinking the photo gallery pages!

Plus, I’ve noticed that all the comment counters are zero until someone posts a new comment, then they seem to be correct.

    Strange…

I’ve cleared the user table too - but hopefully there’s no need to login just to post comments anyway now.

  • Wooooo Hooooo! Looking sexy Tom! Kubrick, can’t beat it ;) And SK2! Hope it works you. I found it quite complicated at first (but I’m a little dumb on some things), but the author seems to be a really open and helpful chap.

And now I have someone who I can questions to each and every time I break my site. I am a happy camper!

    All the best…

  • “And now I have someone I can ASK questions to” (obviously)!

Ollie, it may not be pretty, but it’s working - “design” stuff will come later!

As for you asking me, at the moment I’m more likely to be asking you!

  • You deserve to, after all the help you have given me! Drop me a line, and if I can help, I will. (I was joking about the Kubrick thing, by-the-way - I know what is like to finally see the blue header and think, “Thank f*** it works!”)

Things are slowly starting to come together - random images are back, last.fm is back - and for now I’m using the K2 theme - until I get round to sorting things out for myself!

  • I’ve just spent 10 minutes continually clicking the Change/Close button next to my name. I never knew of this K2 feature until now. I’m gonna play with it some more now.

I’m not quite sure what you’re referring too… I’m still learning a lot about this theme!

  • Where it says Leave a Reply, Welcome back Oliver White (or Tom Marshall or whoever), Change/Close. When you click Close/Change, there’s a little Javascript thing that animates the big text entry box up and down to hide/show the Name/Mail/Website boxes. I only noticed it yesterday and it’s quite nifty. But then, it’s always the simple things that attract me. Like shiny buttons and bottle tops…

I’ve not seen that yet - probably because I’m always logged on when I’m on the site!

Nice, there’s few touches like that (have you noticed that it doesn’t reload the page to display a comment you post either)

I think I’m gonna stick with k2, and do some customising to the design - as at the moment it’s still in it’s default state as I start pulling things together…

  • The more I look at K2, the more it looks to be quite good. At first, I was all like “It’s just going to be Kubrick all over again, and everyone will be using it” but because it has some really nice features, I think it will stand the test of time better.
And I think I am only just realising how serious your spam issue is/was. No wonder you were getting frustrated with it.

Spam - the numbers at the bottom of the page are just the ones that are getting through the first-line defences in my htaccess - which blogs a load of known referrers by name and or IP and browser identity strings!

K2 is going to get fairly heavily customised before I’ve finished with it - but as I always do, it seems a good foundation to build my customisations on - and there’s loads I think I can now do easily, which b2evo made very very hard!

I wish I’d made this change a long time ago…
