So it begins…

The summer of football and reality TV starts with a vengeance tonight, with the arrival of 13 weeks of the dullest programming since the test card disappeared from our screens… yes, it’s the 7th series of “Big Brother”…

Now, I’ve ranted before about what a total waste of airtime this show is, and how deluded the production company are at their “popularity”.

I have no doubt that it’s relatively popular, as even people who hate the concept are talking about it - but at the end of the day, watching 12 people arguing and bickering in a house designed to be unpleasant to live in is hardly riviting television… yes, people want to see romance blossom, at the end of the day, this is voyeurism at it’s most commercial. It beggars belief why anyone would give up their life for potentially 3 months, probably have to quit their job etc, and possibly come out at the end of the penultimate week with nothing - sorry, but most people can’t do that - mortgages don’t pay themselves…

Then there’s the upcoming World Cup - so many England flags being sold, again, really, does it matter, do you think I care about the result of 22 overpaid men kicking a small ball around a field?

Update I’ve added a poll to the sidebar here - vote for your favourite summer event from “The World Cup”, “Big Brother”, “Doctor Who kicking some Cybermen Arse”, and “None of the above”

  • My vote for the favourite summer event goes to the first Tour d’ France that I will be able to watch without knowing who would win from the start. Otherwise Reading Festival and Oakwood trip are high up the list.

Excellent - you’re going to make the ECC’s Pembrokeshire Drinking Festival Oakwood trip this year :-)

  • Of course, fifth year in a row for me.

  • I voted for Music Festival, although I am actually referring to seeing the Foo Fighters live at Hyde Park with QOTSA supporting. Well, it’s close enough to a ‘festival’!

  • That looks to be an ace line-up, was considering it but I don’t like the idea of Hyde Park for gigs, seems so distant. Also it was the line-up of Reading last year.

  • I saw the Chili’s in Hyde Park a couple of years ago and it was probably the best gig I have been to. Plus I also got to see the Godfather of Soul as an added bonus! I will never forget the moment during Scar Tissue when the live video cut to a camera shot from behind the band to reveal a setting sun - the moment when the entire audience turned around and went “ahhh”.

Anyway, to keep this vaguely on topic, I agree with Tom when it comes to all things ‘I’m a brother in a house, get me out of here’ - I cannot stand it and I think it is a complete waste of money and time. And I won’t say what I think when I see the TV listings for a ‘World Cup Summer’. Fours years is not enough…

  • The problem with polls is….what happens if you can’t decide between 3 of them! Doctor Who, Eurovision, and ECC Oakwood would be my 3. I’ve already done a dancing festival (does that count as music?), and World Cup and Big Brother don’t interest me at all.

    Well, we’re all different.

Well, I’m glad to see that so far, the Eurovision Song Content has gotten a resounding “Nil Points”, and that both the big “media” events (Big Brother and the Football) are doing worse than a Sci-Fi series…

The poll was just a bit of fun really, I’ll probably close it fairly soon - especially as the Cyber Arse Kicking will take place tomorrow evening on BBC1 anyway…
