Eurovision, Lordi Lordi…

I’ll say here from the start, I didn’t watch the whole thing this year, but did catch the end, when the winning band gave their encore performance… and of course, have been reading up on the very unusual winners…
Looking like extras from Lord of the Rings, “Lordi” produced one of the most unusual Eurovision winners for years - none of the traditional meaningless pop ballads and love song, but a heavy metal rock track, Hard Rock Hallelujah which has to be one of the most distinctive eurovision winners ever, and if we’re lucky will change the face of the competition forever.
The victory is a vote against empty soul-less pop music across Europe - the winners had something distinctive, and put on a real show.

Well, I’m not embarrassed to say I love it! It’s great entertainment, there are always one or two surprises, and yes there are some good songs amongst the dross too. And you have to admit that Athens put on a good show -that’s what make sit for me, it’s the event itself and the occasion as much as the songs themselves. I really liked the Finland entry, although I hope we don’t want to see an influx of Lordi clones over the next few years - that will then get boring! But I hope it will encourage countries to think outside the Europop box. It can sometimes backfire (as it did seemingly with the UK this year), but then again unless you’ve got a really, really good Europop song then that will always backfire too (e.g. France and Spain).
I think this year there was a much bigger range of songs than the usual fluffy pop offerings. There was a country song, a song about doing the twist, obviously the awful rap from the UK, and obviously the very scary monster type things.
I hope it’s a sign of things to come, that the music will become better and more diverse, but of course, that’s not going to change the politicalness of the voting, and the fact that the UK will never win!
At least, not while we’re doing things in the world that other European countries don’t agree with - like, oh, I dunno, having loads of troops in a small oil-rich middle-eastern country who had
weapons of mass destuctionsa leader we didn’t like (in which case, why aren’t we invading all the other countries with “questionable” leaders…)I consider my house a separate country from the UK (it’s an anti-Blair thing), and I’ve probably got some WMD’s growing in the back of the fridge, so if Tony wants to send some troops my way he is welcome to. This weekend is good but only after 10am - I would like to sleep in on Sunday.
I didn’t get to see Eurovision, but like most others, I have been reading up on the winning band. I find it interesting that such a performance should win a traditionally pop-littered competition. But I say “Hurrah” to Lordi. It may not change the competition forever, but it is a small victory towards the end of lovey-dovey-same-old-pop-ballads.
I assume you’ve seen the Family Guy episode where Peter declares independence from the US?
Peter Griffin, an inspiration to us all…
…Now if only Mr Blair could be inspired and follow Peter’s example!
You’ve all missed the two big events of the competition:
1) “Amazing” has lept over “the” in the league table of most commonly used words
2) Turkey gave points to Greece!!! (I think the world must be about to end)
James
Which is no doubt why I missed those other events!
There are moments when I feel proud to be British, and one such moment came when I heard the annnouncement that the UK had given 10 points to Lithuania’s wonderful song, “We are the Winners of Eurovision”. Definitely my favourite ever Eurovision song, and the only song in the history of the contest to get booed. Wonderful!
But what’s the deal with the countries only reading out their top 3 places? The old system was incredibly boring, which is why we all loved it.
