I want to ride my Bicycle…
… well, actually, I don’t…
But it’s a necessary part of the whole “trying to lose weight” thing I’ve got going on - I’m back counting points for food, and today, for the first time, I got on my bike and rode into work* instead of bringing the car…
Today, I’ve learnt that the route to work is uphill, pretty much all the way (the route profile is shown here, thanks to GMaps Pedometer)… at least that means the run home is downhill pretty much all the way…
I also learnt that my bike’s gears need adjusting before I do that again… gear shifting was not as smooth and easy as it should be, but the adjustments are fairly simple to do.
* - by ride into work, I mean, cycle along the flat bits, and push the bike on the uphill bits…

Note, that profile represents a climb of about 100ft over a distance of around 2km
The best thing (particularly at the end of a hard day at work) is cycling home downhill. You’ll might even find it quicker than driving. Working in a city centre I found I got home quicker on a bike than negotiating the one way system in a car! Good to know you’re cycling though, it’ll get easier I promise.
Well, at the moment I’m aiming for once or twice a week (weather permitting) - today will be the last time this week - mainly ‘cos the bike still needs work and I won’t have much time to sort out the gears until the weekend - as I don’t work in a city centre - I’m not expecting cycling to be quicker.
However, today proved it’s possible - however I need to figure out a better route…
Cycling is ace. I am confident I can beat cars between where I live and where I work.
John - I’ve no doubt that in a busy city, biking can be as fast, if not faster than the car - where i live and work - coming into work cycling takes about twice as long as driving, and heading home there’s very little in it.
Of course, that’s mostly because it’s downhill all the way home, and I can achieve speeds above 20mph for a good deal of it - and take shorter routes than the cars can…
