“Go, Go, Go”

According to Digitalspy - legendary F1 commentator Murray Walker will be returning the microphone to commentate on the European Grand Prix, this year at the Nüerburgring, for Radio 5 in a few weeks time.

Now all I have to do is remember to turn the sound down on the telly and use the radio for the commentary for that race…

Is this formula one, or a cookery show…

Cooking with HeikkiToday I actually watched the whole programme of the F1 GP, rather than coming in late for just the race - and F1 Coverage from ITV has taken a turn for the worse - with a segment that can only be called “Cooking with Heikki Kovalainen”

I want to watch F1 - I don’t want to watch a driver preparing a meal for his girlfriend… (and no, I couldn’t find the recipe on the website…)

Ice, Ice, Baby

Thanks to my sister, her b/f, and a couple of their friends - today I saw my first “live” game of Ice Hockey. Local Elite league team the Cardiff Devils were soundly beaten 4-1 by current league leaders Coventry Blaze.

However it took me a while to “pick up” the rules and the way the game was played - partly due to the speed of the whole thing - when the players are hurtling around the playing area at a fair speed, combined with the rapid substitutions and players being “sin binned” for penalty offences (which seemed to leave one or other team short handed for most of the time) just keeping up with the play can be a challenge!

However it was a good evening out, and made a change from my usual Saturday night fair - usually either a cinema visit or watching a DVD at home.

Edit - corrected name of the Coventry team - thanks Dave for pointing that out

Pugelistic Chess

Yes, in a new twist to make chess more interesting, or possibly boxing less dangerous - the World Chessboxing Organisation steps up…

Basically instead of 13 rounds of 2 muscular men pounding each other with padded mittens - now every other round of boxing is replaced with the more intellectual sport of chess.

Yes, Chess.

That game with the little pieces on board of 64 squares.

Now what effect being pounded in a boxing match will have on your ability to play a planned strategy game could make for interesting studies - but can you imagine what Pay-Per-View on Sky will make of it… people don’t watch boxing for the intellectual challenge…

A Super Special Evening

Last night was the 2006 WRC Wales Rally GB Super Special Stage 13 (which I’m not going to type again - so let’s just call it SS13)

A full evening of high-octane entertainment, consisting of about an hour of WRC action in the stage, followed by the MPH show, then more rally action to end the day.

The MPH show consistent of a number of “challenges” between 2 celebrity teams, including car football (as seen on Top Gear a couple of years ago) and “car Rugby” which involved an air-ram launcher, a small car and a set of Rugby posts. Unfortunately, the photos of that didn’t come out :-(

All in all, the addition of the MPH show was an improvement on last year, and I for one am looking forward to repeating this again in 2007.

Formula One Themeparks

The official Formula One website has revealed plans for the first of a number of F1 themeparks - located in Dubai, with the opening scheduled for 2009.

If this is a success will we see more around the world?  I can only hope so.
