It’s true. It’s all true.
Yes, the truth about working in IT. (via Gadgetopia)
To pick two from the list…
Your nontechnical co-workers will use you as personal tech support for their home PCs
and of course…
It will be your fault when users make silly errors
Yes, IT is not the glamourous career path it used to be. It’s not all about new technology (usually it’s about very very old technology)
Marketing and the drive-by download
I was at my local cinema, and had accidentally left the bluetooth features on my phone switched on (I don’t normally. but my sat-nav software switches it on, and sometimes it doesn’t switch back off)
I was therefore very surprised when I was asked to accept a download (given that I was very much alone) It turns out that this a new twist in unsolicited messaging (i.e. spam) - drive-by bluetooth spam.
Of course, I never accept unsolicited bluetooth messages, as they are the most common way for mobile viruses to spread.
Encouraging people to do this is dangerous. Remember. never accept a bluetooth connection unless you’re expecting it.
Depression and splogs
If you found this article anywhere except tvotw.co.uk, or your feed-reader, please find their Google adsense entry, click “ads by Google” and report them for stealing content.
Splog: A website that steals content (partial or full posts) from other sites (normally via RSS feed) and then replublishes it, surrounded by adverts.
Depression: the feeling that the fight against these splog sites is a waste of time.
Posting a short article for the benefit of those sploggers who will now rip it and make it their own - Priceless ![]()
An idea…
This is something I’d like to see - but never have.
A Sound-Card-Firewall.
Basically, like Zonealarm allows you to give applications permission (or deny them) to access the network/internet - how about a piece of software that allows you to give applications permission to access the soundcard… So I can have sound off for web-browsers, but on for, say the email notification sound from Outlook - preventing annoying flash ad’s for smilies from suddenly shouting something through my speakers when I’m online.
Geeks and Cooking…
Give a geek a challenge, like “Bake a birthday cake for Engadget” and see what a geek can do with…
- Cake mix
- Baking Trays
- Oven
- CAD Software
- 45w Computer Guided Laser Cutter
- Fresh Cream
- Food Colouring
Huh, CAD Software and a Laser?
Email Domesday book.
The BBC are reporting that there is a plan afoot to create an email “snapshot” of modern life.
However they’re asking for emails representing your interests and life - rather than a true representation of the contents of your inbox.
Sensible I suppose - ‘cos a true indication would be one or two “real” emails, then a few hundred offering cheap pharmaceticals, loans, stock advice, dating services, “male enhancements” etc.
(is it just me, or is anyone else seeing a massive increase in “foreign language” spam - I’ve got loads using Cryllic typefaces with subject lines like - “подключение телефонии” )
Vista Pricing Update
Following on from my earlier post on the subject, it’s come to my attention that there is now a petition with over 2000 signatures on the Government Petitions Website regarding the overpricing of Windows Vista here in the UK.
